The third-highest mountain peak in the world, Mount Makalu, is situated in the eastern Himalayas. Seven separate valleys branch off of this mountain, one of which being the Barun valley, which is home to many of the country’s few surviving natural forests and several types of alpine meadows.
The 2330 square kilometer Makalu-Barun valley is an essential part of the ecology that supports the majestic Mount Everest. It contains the Qomolungma Nature Preserve in the north and the Sagarmatha National Park to the west.
